How Do You Prevent Slips In The Workplace?Posted on 8th April 2019

Slips and trips in the workplace cause 40% of all reported major injuries and can lead to other serious injuries for workers who fall at work.

Just searching for 'Slips in the workplace'  will bring up a list of companies who are offering to help with compensation for injury in work claims.

The HSE states:

'The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 requires employers to ensure the health and safety of all employees and anyone affected by their work, so far as is reasonably practicable, which means balancing the level of risk against the measures needed to control the risk in terms of money, time or trouble. This includes taking steps to control slip and trip risks.'

Using the right slip resistant Safety Footwear is very important, but how do you make the right choice?

Here are a few guidelines:

Step 1 - Determine the nature of the floor in the workplace and there is a really useful guide on the HSE website.

Step 2 – Decide which Safety Footwear suits the work environment. Currently there are 3 different slip resistant classifications and it is mandatory for all workplace footwear, both safety and occupational, to be slip resistant.

These classifications are as follows:

SRA Footwear - is tested on a ceramic surface with dilute soap solution as a slipping agent.

SRB Footwear - is tested on a steel surface with glycerol as a slipping agent.

SRC Footwear - is tested on both ceramic and steel surfaces with both dilute soap and glycerol as slipping agents.

It should be noted that these test surfaces are not wholly representative of all underfoot surfaces, so additional information may be needed to help to identify the best slip-resistant shoes for your particular environment.

SRC is the most protective (or preventative), however it is important to remember that you should not be guided by the rating alone and that a lower rating may suit your workforce or the task it is undertaking better.

Step 3 - Trial the Safety Footwear in the workplace.

There is nothing better that checking the chosen Safety Footwear in any specific working environment.
